BASIC COURSE INFORMATION

As an online course, the writing that we do in English 305 is substantially
different from a face to face course. As such, it is imperative that you
understand the course style from the start. Nearly all of your work in this
course will be posted on the course blog. EACH WEEK YOU WILL HAVE THREE BLOG
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A BLOG ENTRY,
2. A READING, AND
3. A WRITING ABOUT
THE READING.

Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by
the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. You have all week each week to complete the reading and writing for that week, but there are no late assignments accepted, so be sure to be disciplined about the
work from the start.
Let me re-state that point; if you do the assigned
work before or during the week it is due, you will receive full credit. If you do the work after the Friday of the week it is assigned, you will get zero credit for that week.

WEEK SEVEN BLOG ENTRY

Do you have any good habits in your life? What is something that you do habitually that contributes something positive to your life?

52 comments:

  1. I habitually try to keep optimistic about many things in life in order to keep sane. Even on a bad day, I will try to justify it with fantastical delusions of optimism For example, if someone lets out a racial slur or propositions a quarrel with me, I would just ignore them and tell myself that they were just saying that out of spite or jealousy. If my server at a restaurant forgets my order, I would probably chalk it up to a minor mistake and not fuss about it. I would like to think of this as a pretty good habit, as it is positive and encouraging. However, sometimes it leads me to think that I am being overly optimistic. However, according to a recent study, a majority of individuals share this same trait, so I guess I am not alone.

    1. Daniel, that is a great habit to follow. Being optimistic is a positive thing and many people should be optimistic. I am very optimistic as well I like to see positives out of negatives. This is important because one must not always be negative we must think positive and set our mind to only positives. Being optimistic as you say is followed my a majorith of people, therefore it must be a great/positive habit.

    2. I agree with Enalisa, that is a GREAT habit. I am pessimistic thus I WISH I could be optimistic and I am trying to change my negativity but is so hard. Thus, I admire that you do not let negative aspects get the best of you. Because sometimes being too negative can seem like paranoia and that is unfortunate. I rather take everything light heartedly and move on with my day. Because how you let things impact can take a toll on your health. For example, I come from a negative family and one day my mom had told us she went to AT&T and had spoken to a representative about my brother's data plan. My mother had asked if my brother could have his iphone without using the internet and the representative had said no ma'am the iphone needs the internet because it is a smartphone. My mom came back home FURIOUS and had told us that the guy had told her it is a "SMART" phone like she is too dumb to understand. She said she was so upset that she gave herself a headache because she felt like the man was insulting her intelligence. I started laughing and told her she's crazy because the reason the guy said it was a smart phone was because in order for the phone to do all the fun stuff it does is because it needs the internet which is why they call it a smart phone. She felt so ridiculous for letting a small comment get the best of her. Thus, being optimistic would be a great habit to have.

    3. I can relate to your habit. I try to be as optimistic as possible when possible. Someone has to be. Life would seem very negative if we didn't keep a positive attitude. I think it helps give our lives purpose in a way.

  2. Many of us might not always have the best habits, and I am guilty of that. As we get older we can pick up some bad, un-healthy habits. For example: eating fast food, not exercising, smoking, and many other bad habits. One great habit that I have is to exercise daily or every other day. I also try to use my bicycle on a daily basis. I believe that this habit contributes to a positive life style. This is because I stay healthy and I use my bicycle therefore I am helping the environment. I am helping the environment by reduce my car usage. I not only do this daily I also encourage people around me to stay healthy and use their bicycle. Staying healthy is important for me and my family; I believe I have a positive habit.

    1. Bike riding is a fun way to help the air, and to get some exercise in. May is bike month too! My husband and I both love to ride our bikes and he tries to ride his bike to work instead of driving to get a good work out in. I am glad to see bike riding has become more popular in bakersfield, espeically with the bike it makes it more enjoyable. Thanks for your post!

    2. You may have some unhealthy habits but so do many of us. I totally have a bad habit of eating unhealthy so I am definitely with you on that one. But like smanuele said bike riding helps our environment and you incorporate good amount of exercise by doing that and encourage others to do the same. Thus, it is great that you encourage others to follow your good habits.

    3. I think it is great that you help our environment by riding your bicycle every day. Exercising daily is a very great habit to have. I also share the similar habit, and I try my best to fit in some exercising time into my everyday schedule. Although I may skip a day or two I always force myself to get back out and exercise.

      Delete
    4. I also try and ride my bicycle every night. Its a great way to get some cardo exercise, not hurt the enviorment and enjoy the cooler nights in this normally ridiculously hot city...keep it up!

      Delete
    5. I actually have a pretty hard time trying to keep up with my exercise schedule. I always try to start one but then I end up either being extremely lazy and forgetting to, or simply just stop doing it halfway. I wish there was a way to motivate myself to continually live an active and healthy lifestyle, but it seems impossible. Maybe if there was some kind of motivation pill or something, but I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself here.

      Delete
    6. I would love to have these habits. I think exercise and fitness is something you can't incorporate enough. I think the key to maintaining a fit lifestyle is to make it a habit. Once it becomes an everyday, natural factor in your life, its easier to keep up with. One major pitfall is when people (including myself) make it an occaisional big event, then its a burden and you're less likely to want to go to the gym or go for a run, etc. And helping the enviroment is always a plus!

      Delete
  3. I have two good habits in my life that contribute to something positive, the first is exercising. I always try to stay active in some way. I have a sedentary job, so it is easy for me to get out of shape. I try to exercise on a regular basis, but every once in a while will go on a six month hiatus from the gym. I always end up going back and getting back into a routine. Also, I am pretty good of incorporating some sort of activity into my schedule even if I haven’t been to the gym in months. I will either go on bike rides, or play outside with my kids. Sometimes, I will just do a work out DVD or park really far from work and school to get a little exercise in. So exercise is the first habit in my life that I do habitually. The second is practicing forgiveness. People, including myself, tend to hold onto grudges and get wrapped up in bitterness from those who have wronged us. In the end, it only hurts us and usually the person we have been wronged by has no clue, or could care less. I work hard at forgiving, not for those I am angered at, but for my own peace of mind. Letting go, and just forgiving in the end really contributes to good health, and a sense of peace. I have found it is much harder to not forgive, than to just let go, move on and forgive. You are able to release so much pressure and tension from your life when you do. So exercising and forgiveness are two habits that contribute positively to my life.

    1. I also believe that forgiveness is important. I once read that holding a grudge was like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer and refusing to stop because the other person doesn't deserve it. I also believe it takes practice to forgive and something we should do everyday.

    2. It's inspiring to read that you take time for exercise, even with kids. That's a big problem for people, like myself, to fit in some sort of activity while raising kids.

  4. A good habit that I have is the desire to help people. I constantly care for others. If there is any way that I can be of any help then I will help. For example, I am bilingual and can speak Spanish and there have been countless occasions that I will translate to be helpful to others even when it's for random people. I enjoy lending a helping hand in any way possible. It could be just hearing someone out when they are stressed or giving them a ride to a certain place. In another case I have found cell phones and other items in random places and I try my best to find it's rightful owner. Thus, seeing that I can help people in any shape or form is a satisfaction for me. In addition if I do that for random people I definitely will help my friends and loved ones. The habit of caring and helping contributes to my personal life because I do not want to sit there and be useless when my help could have changed someone's life or their mood of the day. Because in the end I think treat others the way I want to be treated and if I help then maybe (it doesn't matter if it is) the favor will one day be returned when I need help.
Also, another good habit that I have is that I HATE littering. It is disrespectful to ourselves and our planet and I just think if everybody did their share of NOT littering our world would be little cleaner. The aspect of not littering also contributes to my life because just how I don't want to see a world looking like a mess, I don't like my room looking like a mess.

    2. That is very nice and distinctive. It surprised me for a moment because I expected people will write about habits such as reading, smoking, drinking…etc. it is good to know that there still people care about each other and have this honest deep intention to assist others. You also gave a very handy simple example for helping people by translating for them. I work for a drug retail store in a Hispanic community and although I do not speak Spanish, I always do my best, using sign language, to understand what they are trying to say so I can help them find their needs.

  5. I laugh every day. No matter how bad my day goes or how frustrated I get I always find a way to make myself laugh. I think it is important for me to keep a good sense of humor because it helps keep life in perspective. Life doesn’t always go the way we think it should and sometimes bad things happen, but there is always room for a little laughter. I find this is very helpful right before I give a presentation. I still get nervous when I speak in public so I will look around the room and talk to people so I can find someone who is willing to help me laugh a little. It helps break the tension and it allows me to get to know the audience a little. When I do this I relax a little more and am able to regulate my voice better and am more likely to make eye contact with people. I believe laughter is good for your health and good for the soul. It lowers stress and in general makes life a little better. I know the people I can go to when I need to laugh and joke around a bit and they are the same people I can tell anything to. They are the ones that I have the best memories with and who I have the longest relationships with. And in my family, I am the one everyone goes to when they need a little laughter. I think I like this about me. It is something that I get to share with others and something others can share with me

    1. I think smiling and laughing are good habits everyone should apply in their lives. Even if your not having such a great day to fake it because eventually you will end up feeling good. Next time I have a presentation I will try to keep that in mind to laugh a little to take away the nerves. I also believe its a great fun way to relieve stress.

    2. That is a wonderful habit that I did not even consider. I try to make others laugh, but it usually just makes me laugh. I suppose that all hope is not lost because I am still contributing to my health. Everything makes me laugh, so this was nice to read.

    3. So far this is my favorite postive habbit that I have read. Laughter is soo good for the soul! It is soo easy to get wrapped up in your problems and get on the "feeling sorry for yourself" train. Also, I have learned in one of my psyc classes that smiling when your are nervous will help the anxiety go down. So like you said with smiling when you have to give a presentation, that actually does work! Besides, laughter is contagious, and people who are always laughing are the most enjoyable to hang out with. Thanks for your post!

  6. Throughout the years I have developed a couple of habits that have helped me tremendously. Making exercise apart of my daily routine is perhaps the best habit that I have recently picked up. A few years ago I avoided any type of exercise and ate extremely unhealthy. I became ill a couple of years ago and decided that I had to make a significant change in my life. So, I decided that I would do everything I could to live a healthy lifestyle. I struggled at first to make the necessary changes but I eventually got the hang of it. I enjoy exercising because it helps me clear my mind and relieve stress. The best part about having this habit is that I am now the healthiest that I have ever been. Another habit that I have is taking the time to look my best. Even if I only have five minutes to get ready I take that time to make sure I look presentable. I have always had this habit and I think it is very important because the way you feel about yourself reflects the way you react to situations throughout your day. When you have confident you believe in yourself and do things that you wouldn’t have done otherwise. A part of the reality of life is that people do judge you by your appearance. So, every morning I take the time to ensure that I go out looking the best I can.

    1. Although it is not right that people judge each other according to one’s appearance, I agree with you that this is part of the reality of life. What always surprises me is that even the people who know you may treat you differently depending on the way you look or wear. However, dressing nice and good looking is for one’s own benefit because this helps many people to feel more confident and to attain more acceptance and attraction.

  7. Among many good habits I have, reading and playing soccer come first. Reading has contributed a lot to my life in the way I think, act, teach…etc. I always take advantage of any available time to read. I read various types of books such as the holy bible, novels, and of course textbooks. Reading helps me to be an open minded person who accepts others and respects their opinions. With reading, my way in solving problems has dramatically improved for I learned different ways and methods to evaluate the problem and gained the ability to select the suitable steps that need to be taken to solve it. Playing soccer is my second favorite habit. It helps me to stay healthy and on shape, which is very important for me and my family. It also provides a great opportunity to meet with my colleagues and spend some time away from the daily routine. Playing soccer, along with reading, helps me release some of the work stress, refresh my mood, and recharge me to continue. Reading enlightens my way through the day and playing soccer energizes me to fulfill my daily duties. Both of them also helped me to have commitment and never give up before successfully finish what I have previously started.

I think it’s great that you play soccer because you are going to pass down this habit to your family and you might even encourage some friends to do the same. Everyone needs a habit like this in their life and you might just encourage other people to follow in your footsteps.

  8. I, like most people that have already submitted, make it a point to exercise on a daily basis. I get up early, before work, and go to the gym every morning. Not only do I feel that this activity helps to wake me up and prepare for the day, I feel better about myself, I feel more energetic, and I feel that I am preparing myself for a much better future. I have a history of heart disease in my family and I watched my father go through more life and death surgeries tha I care to remember. After you see something like that in your life, it motivates you to make sure you never put yourself or your family in that position. There are some things that I can't stop from happening, but I can do my best to stay healthy and perform as many tasks as necessary to prevent myself from having the same health issues. I've watched my friends and others go to the gym all to try and "get big," or for some other ridiculous reason, when I go I feel like I have a true motivation and an obligation to my future family to stay healthy, so that I can actually be an active father one day.

  9. The first thing I thought of, was giving my daughter plenty of affection. She just turned 11, looks tall, but is still a baby inside. Often times we forget that our children want to be held, comforted, and loved just like when they were smaller children. They already have to endure so much from mean kids at school that they need to know that home is a safe, comfortable place. Providing love and affection to my daughter has made her such a great kid. It has created so much positive in my life. I am such a happy person largely due because my child is happy. Sounds weird, but if you've ever been around an angry/sad kid, then you know what I mean.

  10. I have recently, applied a healthy habit to my life which is trying to work out more. I attend zumba class every Tuesday and Thursday on campus. After the thirty minutes of a good cardio from zumba I try to do treadmill and the machines. I’ve been trying to apply this habit because I want to take better care of myself especially since I have asthma. By working out I can help condition my lungs better and have a longer healthier life. Working out doesn’t just help me live a healthier lifestyle but it is also a good way to relieve stress. This habit of working out helps me release stress because it makes me feel more relax. Not only is working out a good form of relaxation but it also makes me more happy and energized for the rest of the day. If I’m not able to attend the gym I try to work out in my home by adding something fun. For instance, instead of sitting on the couch and playing video games I rather play and exercise at the same time using the Kinect for Xbox. Besides working out I have also tried to cut down on unhealthy foods. Such as eating salads and anything that’s not so greasy like fast food. I’m also working on the habit of trying not to take things to seriously. To laugh it off when I make a mistake and take the moment to realize that not everyone is perfect and that’s okay. Especially, when it comes to school if something doesn’t go my way don’t take it to negative. It’s okay if I didn’t get that grade I wanted, it’s not the end of the world because at least I tried my best and now I know to work harder next time to get to my goal.

  11. I can only seem to remember my bad habits at the moment. The only good habits I can think of are basically everyday dasks. I brush my teeth, shower, and eat everyday. Although these things contribute positively to my life (and the lives of others as they do not have to smell me or hear me complain about hunger), they are not what I would really call habits. I tell my husband "I love [him]" everyday. That contributes something positive to his life. Although I say it habitually, I do find myself saying it often because he does something that makes me smile or laugh as well. I try to pray everyday. Say what you will, but I definitely see results. I wish I could say that I read everyday of my own free will, but it is usually for school. However, when I was reading what I wanted, I found that my spelling and writing improved greatly. Not only that, but my comprehension of vocabulary and others' writings also improved. I should probably get back into this habit. As an artist, I try to draw or do something creative everyday as to improve my skills. Habits are hard to pin down. Once they become habits, they are so second nature that they are difficult to recognize. Therefore, it is difficult to recognize their results apart from others. I think I will be very aware of every move I make for the rest of the week.

  12. I don’t have as many positive habits in my life as I used to, but I am working on incorporating them in my day to day activities again. One thing I like to do when I’m stressed out is walk to the store, which is exercise and also helps to clear my mind. I also find cleaning very therapeutic when I need to clear my mind. I feel best when my house is neat, clean, and organized. I used to do yoga everyday and am starting to get back into it, which is a great break from the stress and strain of life. Playing with my cats is also a stress reliever, and it’s fun for them as well. Watching something as simple as cats playing with a laser is amusing and fun. One habit I’m getting back into is cooking healthy meals. I’m a vegetarian so generally there’s quite a bit of prep work involved, and the last few months I had fallen into a lazy cycle of processed-boxed food. I’m now preparing healthy meals from scratch again, which makes me feel much healthier as a person.

  13. A good habit (most of the time) that I have is thinking of ways to improve myself as a whole.I think that I have alot of great qualities and consider myself to be an overall good person, however I can always improve. I think at times I can bit a tad bit too quick to judge or too emotional or even too passive. I wake up everyday and ask myself how I can be better. I want to be a better daughter, sister, friend and student. And I think the first step is realizing your "problem areas" and trying to address them in the best way possible. Although, this habit of mine can be detrimental if you become too fixated on those areas that need help. I give myself a break when I dont always show improvement in the areas I'm trying to fix about myself. Alot of me improving is really just correcting old bad habits, which is sometimes easier said than done. But i think that habitually trying to become a better version of me is a good thing overall.

  14. I have developed 2 good habits that makes my life positive. One, I’ve learned to keep things organized at my home. There is a section or place for everything that used to always get misplaced such as keys, important documents, etc. I also have a calendar that reminds me the due dates for my appointments and bills so that way I don’t forget. This habit of being organized have impacted my life and my family’s life in a positive way. There has to be at least one person in the household that keeps track of everything, and if it’s going to be me, I’d have to have everything organized. I also have a habit of appreciating everything that comes my way. When things turn out good or bad, I see it as “it happened for a reason.” When I see things at this perspective, it makes everything positive.

  15. I try to make sure I workout regularly. Between work and school, working out is a good stress reliever while trying to keep up one good healthy habit. I try to always think before I act, this helps me not to over-react. This is something that has really helped me. My life can get really intense and sometimes I would like to just explode, but I know thats not healthy. I always do my best not to fall behind to always stay on track or ahead. When ever I fall behind I start to let stress in my life. Most of all I just breath! I take a step back to clear my mind and just ignore the things around me, by listen to myself breath.

  16. I think a good habit that I have is my need to be organized and clean. It has become second nature to me to have my house organized. This has a positive contribution to my life because it helps me clear my mind when I am stressed. Another habit that helps me positively is talking to someone when I have problems. Talking with my friends or family helps me deal with the stress that is caused by the problems. Although I have some good positive habits, I would like to work on having more beneficial habits such as working out and eating healthier.

  17. I have done my best to get into the habit of giving. I don't do it for personal gain, other than the hope that I have been able to help someone. One never knows when someone has truly fallen on a hard time or needs a helping hand, so I feel that it is better to give unreservedly (not necessarily monetary) in order to hopefully brighten that person's day. I have to admit that it's not always easy... I work in retail, and there are some who resist kindness, but I try to brush it off as them having a bad day.

  18. Habits are very important to living a good healthy live, but I must admit not all of my habits are good. I have a few habits that I would like to change because I now that they are not exactly healthy for me and some even affect my kids. For example now that I am in school full time I don’t always have time or I just get too lazy to cook so it has become a habit to go out to eat. Another habit that I know is not good for me is that I stay up late, I try to go to sleep at a good time but I just can’t it’s a habit and bad habits are hard to break. Despite my bad habits I do have good habits that, I believe, keep me from going insane. I make it a habit to be optimistic because no matter how bad things get or seem to be, things will always turn out right. Always look at the bright side, which goes together with being optimistic. I also have the habit of giving people the benefit of the doubt. My husband says that I like to defend other people but I just tell him that that we don’t know there side of the story, we don’t know why they do what they do maybe they have a good reason. One habit that keeps me sane, I don’t know if it’s good or bad, is don’t let the little things get to you. I see so many people that get very upset or in a very bad mood over small things like for example, if you plan a trip to Disneyland and things don’t go exactly how you planed them. I say just make the best of what did go right because by being angry or in a bad mood you are just wasting your time and life is too short to spend it angry.

  19. I think my best habit is that I am honest, sometimes too honest. People claim to be truthful, but are we truthful, even when it may hurt another? I am which can sometimes be a negative. There are ways to be truthful without being hurtful. I am truthful to my friends and family, and sometimes strangers, which can be a bit much for many people to take. When someone I know asks what I think about something, I tell the truth, which may not be what he or she wants to hear. However, they know that they will hear the truth from me. Many times I have been accused of being without a filter, but this is what makes me the person I am.

  20. I believe many people interpret the word "habit" as a derogatory term, and automatically start thinking of their bad habits. I have to admit, that is where my mind went. I do have a few good habits that get me through the day though. I like to laugh, and always try to see the humorous side of things. I realize that I am not the funniest of people, but I have always had "funny" friends. They keep me laughing and that is how I honestly get through the tough times, a good laugh and my friends. I am truly lucky because somehow, I have managed to surround myself with absolutely wonderful people. If that isn't a good habit, I don't know what is. Also I try to be aware of the little jesters in life that make such a big difference to others. For example, last week my company was moving office buildings. There is an elderly lady that has an office down the hall from mine. I noticed that she was carrying big boxes up and down the halls. I immediately took the large boxes from her and traded her with much smaller boxes. I really didn't think much of it. A few days later, she stopped in my office and told me how appreciative she was. She did not want to lead on that she was having a hard time with the move in front of the bosses. She thanked me continuously and stated that no one else had even taken a second glance. This was something that I gave no thought to, must have been my "good habits" kicking in. I'm so glad that I have these good habits. It sure does feel good when you are thanked for them!

  22. When I read this question, it was hard for me to come up with a habit that I have that contributes to something positive in my life. It's like when someone asks you a question that you know you know the answer to but being put on the spot leaves your mind blank. I thought about it for a minute and I came up with the best habit that I have: making my kids' plates before my husbands and mine. In this way, I make sure that they get plenty and grow up healthy and strong. Another good habit that my husband and I both share is that we tend to help those in need. This makes a positive impact in my life by knowing that we're helping somebody who needs it and then I feel a little better about myself.

  23. Some of the habits I have are donating, no littering, and helping others. I believe that littering can be damaging to the community. I think every individual is capable of picking up after themselves and capable of helping to maintain the community clean. I believe that it will be selfish to retain things that I don't have a use for anymore. I like to take time to do some spring cleaning and get rid of things that I think can be useful to others and that I do not need anymore. I also ask my children to help me identify things they do not need, use, or clothes that doesn't fit them anymore to take to a church, resource center, or friends in need. Helping others is one of my best habits, I enjoy doing what I do for a living. Once I discovered that helping people was one of my special talents, I decided to make it my career. I do not help people to get anything in return, I do it because I love helping. I will say that my habits are mostly habits I learned from my family. Growing up I recall my parents being strict with my siblings and I about us being responsible for picking up after ourselves and being polite to others. Going to church is one of the things I do habitually that positively contributes to my life. Having a relationship with god and having faith definitely allows me to go on everyday and have a better understanding about life. I understand and respect that not everyone practices a religion. I will definitely continue to practice my habits and will continue to encourage my children to do the same.

  24. I have many good habits that can be good and bad in different ways. I tend to be very optimistic. I try to rationalize what happens in my daily life as everything happens for a reason. If I didn't, I would feel really miserable most of the time. I also have a looot of patience when it comes to dealing with people and I can also keep my cool when dealing with angry people. There's been days when it just seems like I keep confronting a chain of bad events and then finally something good may happen at the end. My way of thinking would just rationalize it, if so and so didn't happen I wouldn't have experienced that one good thing. It can keep me from looking at situations realisticly. When I get angry, I literally can only stay mad for a few seconds. It helps me deal with difficult people because the last thing you need is two angry people trying to come to a conclusion. If someone gets me angry, I rationalize it as not being worth it. It can be frustrating sometimes because it makes it makes me shy away from being confrontational when the situation asks for it. I have all these pent up words that go unspoken but leave my mind as quickly as they come to me. It affects future interactions and relationships between me and other people.

  25. One good habit of mine is to keep a clean home. Some may not like it because I have my friends who visit clean as well but keeping clean is a good habit to keep. Cleaning is a good habit because your house looks nice and you keep bacteria as well as other rodents out of your home. I am not a fan of mice and roaches and ants can be bothersome so a clean home is something good to keep.

  26. I have many good habits that I use in my life. I love to play a lot of sports. I also love to be competitive when I play sports. This requires me to exercise a lot. To be honest I don't really exercise to stay healthy. I love to exercise because it helps me stay at the top of my game. I love to be competitive when I play against my friends. When I go to the rec center at shool to do some workouts it prepares me for different sports. Whether it's basketball or softball, I need to stay in shape to be competitive. Another thing I love to do is go to the Kern river bike path and ride bikes. This helps me keep my stamina for basketball. I started doing this so that it could help me in sports but I now love this. Everyone I go bike riding I have fun and I love it. These things have helped me in sports but they have also kept me healthy. This has affected my health in a positive way.
