BASIC COURSE INFORMATION

As an online course, the writing that we do in English 305 is substantially
different from a face to face course. As such, it is imperative that you
understand the course style from the start. Nearly all of your work in this
course will be posted on the course blog. EACH WEEK YOU WILL HAVE THREE BLOG
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A BLOG ENTRY,
2. A READING, AND
3. A WRITING ABOUT
THE READING.

Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by
the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. You have all week each week to complete the reading and writing for that week, but there are no late assignments accepted, so be sure to be disciplined about the
work from the start.
Let me re-state that point; if you do the assigned
work before or during the week it is due, you will receive full credit. If you do the work after the Friday of the week it is assigned, you will get zero credit for that week.

What is the greatest movie of all time and why?

(REMEMBER, write approximately a paragraph and then come back later and respond to what your classmates have written)

  1. The greatest movie of all time is Shawshank Redemption. This movie evokes a deeper emotion on top of being entertaining. From the beginning of the film, the audience is pulled in by woman having an adulterous love affair as her husband watches. The husband barges in the room and appears to kill his wife and her lover. Soon after the husband, Andy Dufresne, is sentence to life in prison, in spite of his constant pleas of innocence. Just the first 20 minutes of the movie captivates the audience. It makes you intrigued as to why Andy, who is seemingly guilty, claiming innocence. Once Andy arrives to the prison, he quickly befriends an older, more seasoned, inmate named "Red". Red sort of takes Andy under his wing and shows and explains prison life to him. Andy's quiet, calm demeanor makes him a target among some of the other prisoners and he is beaten for no reason. Also, Andy's intellect allows him to get close enough to the warden and the guards to help them with their taxes. Throughout the movie, Andy's series of relationships with prison staff and fellow inmates allow the audience to get to know and have empathy towards him. It is especially sad once its revealed that Andy did not commit any murders and is falsely imprisoned. At this point in the film, I wished I could free Andy myself because I felt so bad for him. Luckily, Andy finds a way to free himself, literally. I felt almost just as victorious as Andy when they showed him escaping the prison. The movie was, and still is, riveting and is a great piece of cinema.

    1. I have also seen this movie and I think it is a very intriguing and captivating film. It is very interesting in how Andy figures out a way to create a new identity to redeem himself of the false imprsionment for charges he did not commit. At first I thought how unfortunate for Andy that he seems to be abused by everyone and in the end he was smart enough to have patience to escape when the opportunity came and with loads of money. It is interesting and makes me think of how important it is to not quickly judge of whose guilty or not. This film also makes me wonder how many individuals have many individuals have been incarcerated or even sentenced to death on false imprisonment.

    2. I have not yet seen this film, but the premise behind it seems very interesting. The topic of innocent people behind bars seems to radiate a sort of eerie dreadful feeling, as it is one thing to be accused of something, but to be punished for something that you are completely innocent of is pure torment. I'll probably make an effort to watch this timeless classic at some point in the near future, with the hopes of being simultaneously entertained and enlightened.

  2. It is hard to choose what movie is the greatest of all time, but a movie that I found extremely touching is The Help. In the movie, the main character, Skeeter, is a young Caucasian woman before the civil rights movement in Georgia who is striving to be a journalist. Thus, she has an idea of writing about "The Help" which refers to all African American women who work for the Caucasian families by raising the children and completing all the chores and house work. She wants to reveal the details of their lives by writing about how they build close bonds to the children they raise, the unfairness and happy times they experience. At first none of the maids wanted to participate in fear that their employers would find out and would not be able to work again. However, as time passes some of the African American women get frustrated and reveal to Skeeter all their stories for the public to read. This movie is a must see movie because it shows that skin color does not make a difference and that people should be acknowledged and treated as equals no matter what skin color. And it's a touching movie especially knowing that Skeeter being Caucasian was bold enough to try expose a conflicting topic during that time period. Skeeter was raised by an African American woman and loved her as much or even more than her own mother. Thus, she boldly expressed how much skin color did not matter to her and how determined she was to let all of society know that skin color makes no difference when it comes to love, affection and equality.

    1. I read The Help before it became a movie and I couldn't put the book down. It was a very intriguing book and the movie played out exactly as I thought it would. The premise of the movie was straight forward and captured the conflict between white and black people in the south during that time. It was an uplifting movie and I enjoy seeing movies that break barriers with race conflict.

    2. At the moment I don't have time to read other books at this time but once I do I will definitely read the help. Because I have always thought that if I enjoyed the movie then I will LOVE the book and so I will definitely read The Help when I get a chance.

    3. I just saw this movie last weekend and I thought it was awesome. In my opinion, the way that The Help were treated was horrible. The maids took more care of the white children then their own mothers did. I couldn't imagine someone else raising my children or getting onto them for going to the bathroom in a tiolet when they are being potty trained. I also thought that Skeeter was very brave in going against what the norms were in those times because she could have gotten seriously hurt or her family even. So it took guts to write about the help and get things changed for them.

  3. For me, the greatest movie of all time has to be Casino. When it comes to Martin Scorsese, there is a divide - those who favor Good Fellows and those who favor Casino. Both movies are quite similar, but since I saw Casino first I was on that side of the divide. This movie tells a story about power in Sin City. How easy it is to become corrupted and how hard a person can fall. I always loved this movie because it was interesting to see both the glamorous side and the dark side of Las Vegas. This movie tells a story about Ace, a man who was smart about gambling, knew every trick in the book, and won every time. He eventually gets a gig running a casino and has everything and anything except the heart of his wife. His wife was once a hustler and decided to marry Ace as long as she gives up her hustling lifestyle and has eyes only for him. Of course she doesn’t and she eventually falls hard and fast. The movie also tells the story of the mob and all the crime involved and how they were in once in charge of Las Vegas. It is quite amusing to see how they were able to run the casino from as far as they were (in a completely different state). The parts of the movie when people crossed the mob or the casino would make my knees ache. I absolutely love Casino; I have seen it a million times and can still watch it a million more times. You know a movie is great when you know it by heart, yet you still pause it for bathroom breaks.

    1. I have to agree, Casino is a great movie. The characters are classic tough guys, with the exception of the character played by James Woods. He plays the creepy ex-boyfriend of Ace's wife. I love the fact that she had it all with Ace, but yet could not resist the old lifestyle and her old boyfriend.

    2. (Reply): I haven't seen this movie, but by the way you are describing it, it sounds interesting. It almost sounds like the movie "21," but with a different story line. I have a few family members who love Las Vegas, and I think I might just have them watch this movie when we have our family gathering. I agree with your last statement regarding watching a movie a million times and still press pause during breaks.

    3. I have only seen this movie once and currently I do not recall the whole story. However, after reading your description I realized that the movie is a good movie. I care for those types of movies that do not only entertain but also educate. Learning about street smarts through a movie is not only a creative way but also a smart way to get the message across to the public.

  4. While I do not have a definite, "greatest movie of all time," American History X is one of the best films that I have ever seen. The story follows older brother Derek and younger brother Danny, two white males trapped in a race war between whites and blacks. As a leader of a white supremacist movement, Derek had a lot of things going for him, but after being put through unfortunate circumstances, he turns his life around and tries to convince Danny to do the same. His younger brother was hesitant at first, but slowly began to understand the negativity of white supremacy. Derek’s time spent in prison has seemed to change him, as his relationship with a colored inmate leads to increased hatred from his white gang members. He decides that life is too short to go around with hatred and bigotry, and finally succeeds in converting his younger brother. This leads to discontentment among his associates, but he does not give in to their heckling. The brothers then run home, where tear down the white supremacist propaganda in Danny’s room, sending a clear message that the past is behind both of them. Unfortunately for Danny, he is murdered shortly after his conversion, ending the film on a very somber note. The direction and plot in the film are exceptional, and the message that it brings seems to radiate a sense of deep understanding that many films have never matched. The film will eternally remain on my list of greatest films of all time.

  5. In my opinion, one of the greatest movies I seen, at least animated would have to be UP. UP was a very heartwarming film that had seemed to touch the audience of all ages. It was also an enjoyable movie to watch because it had a storyline for the audience to follow. It took the viewers in a journey of how the main character Carl, in his childhood meets a young adventurous girl name Ellie. Who eventually as they grow older they end up marrying each other. From there on the film evokes the audience in a bittersweet journey, of how this adorable couple has the dream of one day being able to travel to South America together, until Ellie encounters a sickness and then she eventually passes away. The character Carl ages to be a bitter man because of this event that occurred and under other circumstances he was being forced to move out of his house to a retirement home. To avoid all this from happening Carl decides to make his house float away to South America by tying a bunch of balloons to it. While Carl is attempting to hurry, we meet a new character name Russell who’s a boy scout. Russell’s character is trying to win a badge for assisting the elderly, that’s how he ends up in Carls front door step, because he’s asking him if he can assist him in crossing the street. From there on Carl shuts the door in Russell’s face and ignores him, and then cuts down the ropes holding the house down to float away. This is where the whole adventure of these two characters begins. Carl is stuck with a child he didn’t plan to for his getaway to South America, and now must try to make the best of it. These two characters have a good adventure and meet many more characters as they go along to their destination. I enjoyed how the movie shows us how these two characters end up creating a bond and growing fond of one another. Without realizing it these two characters also end up growing emotionally and changing to being a better person. It’s very touching to see how this film carried so many themes so well, such as love, loss, loneliness, drama, adventure, and acceptance. Not only was it a well-made movie but it also had good animation and bright vibrant colors going on. In my opinion you know a movie is a good film when it makes you tear, and this was one of those films that made the audience emotional.

    1. I have seen UP and totally disagree with it being considered great. Although it was a very unique storyline, I was annoyed the whole movie. This was mostly because of the whining, pestering, chubby kid ,Russell, who I could really not feel any empathy for. I feel like generally in most films, you feel compassion for the hero/heroine, protagonist, main character, etc., but in Russell's case I did not feel that. I found myself thinking the whole film why didn't he just stay home to earn his badge, rather than complicating Carl's mission. Every situation he found himself in, he brought on himself. Furthermore, the villain's dogs weren't as scary and intimidating as they should of been, especially when you compare them to Scar from Lion King or Ursula from The Little Mermaid. These points may seem minor, but after watching it a couple times, they really are distracting. I applaud the movie's creators effort to do something outside the box and the life-like animations, but was it enough to classify it as a great film? I think not.

    2. I would have to agree that I would not consider this one of the greatest movies, in fact out of the Pixar movies Toy Story was much better and more creative. This movie was rather slow for me and more depressing than anything. However, the beauty of humans is that we all have different opinions and interests which makes the world less robotic. Thanks for your post!

    3. Ok, I know the other two people dislike it, but I absolutely loved the movie UP! First it holds a sentimental value for me because it was the first movie I ever went to see with my Fiance, and second I think it was something different from what Pixar had done before. It really hit some deep emotional issues and, with the realistic parts, it was similar to peoples' real life situations. At the same time I also thought it was very funny, especially realizing what dogs might actually say if given the chance! Thank you for your post!

    4. I would not agree it was one of the "best" movies, however it was a movie that I appreciated. I am interning with Aging and Adult Services and the movie captured the process of aging, how the elderly become lonely and depressed. I believe the main point of the film was to never give up on your dream no matter how old or young. I viewed this movie from an adults perspective and saw the insight it gave on the elderly.

    5. I think that "Up" is a wonderful movie. I do not cry at movie, but this one had both me and my brother cry. It not only had a great storyline, but it was beautifully animated as well. As far as animated films, it is definitely one of the best.

    6. I really liked UP and even though I wouldn’t call it “the greatest movie ever” it is really good. I did enjoy this movie because it is for all ages; my whole family enjoyed this movie. I really liked that this movie did have a happily ever after but in a different way. Things did not turn out the way Carl wanted them too because his wife died, but he did learn to accept what happened and he moved on with his life. He eventually stopped being bitter and he made the best of his new friend’s company.

    7. I had higher expectations for UP. My cousins had told me that their cousin had gone to watch it with his football buddies and they all ended up crying. I figured the movie must be really moving if it made high school football players cry in front of each other. Overall, it was an okay movie. I wish I would have saved the movie I spent on the ticket and just waited for the movie to come out in redbox.

    8. I personally think that the movie UP was good but it was too depressing. No one wants to imagine their life without their significant other. However, it is good that the old man was able to find other ways to make his life to have a purpose but overall it was a very depressing film.

  6. There are so many great movies out there, but my all time favorite is The Talented Mr.Ripley. This movie was filmed in Italy and shows amazing villages and Italian customs. It also has a great cast including Matt Damon, Jude Law,and Gwyneth Paltrow. Matt Damon plays Tom Ripley, a complicated, pitiful guy who is surrounded by beautiful and successful people. One of those successful individuals hires Tom Ripley to travel to Europe to convince his very spoiled son, Dicki,to return to America. When Tom arrives in Italy, he befriends Dicky and his girlfriend, Marge. Instantly it is clear that Tom is not quite like Dickie and Marge. This couple is great looking, has clothes that are beautiful and stylish, their skin has beautiful golden tones, and they live in obvious wealth. Tom is pasty white, unattractive, and wears an ugly, old, green jacket. Nonetheless, the two become friends and carry on like two teenagers; riding Vespas, listening to music, and going out to clubs. Things start to fall apart when Tom starts to become needy, overly eager, insecure and jealous of Dickie. Dickie responds by calling Tom a bore and a leech, which infuriates Tom. Tom eventually kills Dickie and creates a web of lies to cover up the murder. The rest of the film is Tom's attempt to assume Dickie's identity and lifestyle without anyone finding out. Tom's character is fascinating and creepy at the same time, it is a great film to see if you have an interest in psychology. This is such a great movie with twists and turns of suspense, that I just can't describe in a paragraph.

    1. I haven't seen this film yet, but your post has me intrigued. It sounds like one of those movies that is a nail biter. Rejection is one of the hardest things for people to go through and watching people go through it, in real life or the movies, always pains me. From your description of the movie I am getting the impression that Tom was an outcast who has finally made a friend, a cool and wealthy one to boot, and the rejection is more than he can handle. Looking forward to watching it.

The best movie of all time is “Titanic.” Some may not think so, but I think that movie was produced with creativity and pure imagination. It’s great how that particular historical event was brought back to life for our generation to watch. Sometimes, we tend not to pay attention to an event that occurred from the past unless it is featured through movies or documentaries. Honestly, I knew nothing about Titanic until that movie came out and became a big hit. The love story that was included in the movie between Rose and Jack was also intriguing. The story line was fictional, but very captivating. The soundtrack of the movie made it even better. I thought it was amazing how they were able to replicate the Titanic ship through computer technology. To top it off, the costumes that were worn by the cast was great. I thought the people who were chosen to play the roles in this movie did a magnificent job. Watching the movie brought me back to the past, and there was not one part in the movie where my mind wandered off. Watching the men, women, and children fight for their lives was heartbreaking. I could remember watching a documentary about Titanic and a survivor mentioned that some of the people that were on the ship gave up hope and decided they would just die. Seeing it happen in the movie at the time the ship was sinking was heartbreaking. In my opinion, this is the best movie of all times because it is based on a true story, and it was produced with absolute creativity. The story line, costumes, music, and settings were well put together. It was dramatic, thrilling, and at some scenes, comical. I was impressed.

    1. I love this movie too Elaine, and it is a great production. They have recently made a 3D version that will be out this Friday, I must watch it!
Your so right, we do tend to pay no attention what so ever on the fact that it is an event that has a historical effect. I myself would probably have never heard of the Titanic either if it wasn't for the movie.
I have to agree that the characters played an amazing role especially for Jack, who is all so charming. I completely agree with your post.

    2. Titanic was a well-directed film and had a great storyline between the characters Rose and Jack. I like how they created a love story between these two characters to get the audience more involve in the movie, and actually make us focus on the tragedy of the Titanic. It has been such a great film, which like Enalisa said it’s being brought back to theaters but this time in 3D to let the new generation know about the Titanic. Not only was it a great film but it had a good cast such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Titanic is definitely a must see film.

    3. I agree with you all, the Titanic is definitely a movie to watch. The captivating story behind this movie provides insight into one of the most devastating disasters at sea. It clearly portrays the divisions between the upper and lower classes. One of the most intriguing parts to the movie was the exciting yet heartbreaking love story between Jack and Rose. It was heartrending watching all those people fight for lives. I agree that the new 3D version of this movie will capture the attention of a whole new generation that has never seen this movie before.

    4. I totally agree, Titanic is a great love story. The separation of class did not stop two lovers from being with each other, which is difficult because family is very important, so it is a tough betrayal. The fact that is based on true events makes it even more powerful, but I am so disappointed that it is going to 3D. I personally do not like 3D movies, I can not wait for the 3D era to be over. I think Titanic is a great movie all on its own, I personally do not feel like it needed to be re-introduced in 3D, but everyone is different. Great movie!

    5. Enalisa- thank you for letting me know. I didn’t know a 3D version of this movie will be coming out. I’m definitely going to see it. I’ve watched the replays of this movie tons of times. When I’m in the kitchen cooking, I usually leave the television on, and when I hear the Titanic theme music play at the beginning of the movie, I still get a little excited.
      .
AM26 - I can agree with you about Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winselt. Both of the actors were definitely the correct people to play the role. Even though I am not a fan of DiCaprio, he is charming.
      .
Drivera- Yes, the story behind this movie was great. I love watching movies from the past. It gave us an insight of what and how the people acted in the past especially between the upper and lower classes. After watching this movie, I always imagine about how nice it would be to actually tour the Titanic like the way they did in the beginning of the movie (which is impossible).
      .
Andrea- Yes, the love story is fascinating. I’m sure most of us ladies who are into chic flics were into it. Having it in 3D could be a good thing. It can give the new generation an opportunity to watch it. I mean it plays in the TV now, but most people don’t pay attention to it because they tend to watch something else on TV. Having it back in the theaters could maybe, just maybe get people to watch and pay attention to it.
      .
Thank you all for the response!

    6. Absolutely agree. This movie touches its audience in so many ways. People are already captivated by the tragedy of the Titanic, but to add a love story in the midst of it is ingenious. The special effects and acting in this movie was amazing!

  8. I believe that the Godfather is the greatest movie of all time because it transcends many levels of our society. The movie appeals to those who strive to escape obscurity and make a name for themselves and to those already at the top and want to remain there. I find interesting the inner workings of organized crime and the lengths to which people go to make it work. No expense is out of reach, even at the cost of friends and family. It also emphasizes the importance of some of the most important characteristics of successful families and businesses such as loyalty, obligation, and honor. The movie is so well done that the audience forms an allegiance with the characters and compassion even though their business is a life of crime.
The movie also has a mythic and tragic quality that makes it a well rounded film. It also has conflicts of many kinds throughout and the resolutions to them are at times violent and sometimes heart wrenching. There is so much to like about the film, and its sequels, has entertained the average Joe and movie critics alike. So much so, that the American Film Institute ranked it the best movie of all time in the “Gangster Genre”, and second greatest of all time. It is so popular that it is shown frequently and it is credited with many quotes that are still used today such as, “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
Godfather is at the top of my list and will be at the top of many lists for a very long time.

    1. Yes! I whole-heartedly agree with you! I saw this movie for the first time in a film class I took at the previous community collge I attended, approximately two years ago. I was completely engaged in the characters and the story it tells. Like you mentioned, loyalty is a definte theme that is strongly emphasized. The godfather made sure all of his sons knew that no matter what family was always first. It showed family in a realistic way, with all the highs and lows. I loved also the suspense and drama throughout the film. It kept me guessing about what was going to happen next. The mood set by the music was also a very nice touch. The Italian mafia's lifestyle was so intriguing to me that I was hooked from the first scene and never left my seat!

  9. I beleive that the greatest movie of all time has to be, The Notebook. I guess because I am a chick and its a "Chick Flick," but I love that movie. The movie is great becuase its just so loving and enduring, I will never forget it. For those of you who have never watched The Notebook, it is a Romantic Drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes, which is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. Nicholas Sparks is a great author, therefore you know that movie has to great. This film was released in May of 2004, and made an estimate $115,603,229, thus is according to Wikepedia.
This young couple meet and fell in love, and they grew old together. I love this movie because of that, now in days growing old together as a faithful married couple is uncommon. This movie is beautiful and everytime I watch it I can't help but get all sentimental and tirey eyed; I can watch it all day if I had the time.

Not only that but I love the cast in this film Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, Gena Rowlands, and James Garner, they did an excellent job. Especially, Gena and James they had a beautiful chemistry that made it so much more emotional for the audience to see how the film ended. Not only was this movie beautiful but it was also emotional and heartbreaking, but what else can you expect from a movie based on a novel of such a great writer as Nicholas Sparks.

    2. I love The Notebook, one of the best romantic movies or "chick flicks". This movie is what true love should be all about through thick and thin and sickness and in health. The devotion this husband has for his wife after she has lost her memory is so heart warming. To think that their marriage can last even when the wife cannot remember her husband shows that true love will last through any circumstance. Thanks for the post!

  11. I'm not sure if I can narrow just one movie down to be the greatest of all time, so I will try to pick one of the greatest ones I have seen that's more recent. The movie Inception was an amazing film. I think it contained so many elements that you would want in a great Sci-Fi, action type movie. It was a completely different concept than I had ever seen explored in a film before, it contained so many moments that kept the viewer in suspense, and it always kept you thinking throughout. The idea of venturing into someone else's dream and either implanting an idea or stealing an idea was a very unique and brilliant concept. I haven't talked to a person yet that disliked inception and every agreed that it kept them puzzled up until the end of the film, and some even after. So, as far as recent movies go, I would have to say Inception is one of the greatest movies of all time

  12. The greatest movie of all time is the Patriot. I say this for many reasons. One of which is because that movie showed how the American Revolution tore families and neighbors apart. They way that Mel Gibson played the father was exactly how any father would act if something happened to his family. I have two children of my own and twins on the way and if someone were to murder them in front of my and I, he would probably go and do the same thing while I stayed home with the other children much like Aunt Sarah in the movie. The way that Mel Gibson's character forms a militia and slowly picks off the general's soldiers and eventually helped to win the war was perfect payback for his children being killed. Another reason this movie is so great is because of the part where Mel Gibson's daughter in the movie finally speaks to her dad. The raw emotion that emerges when the girl begs her dad "please don't go" is enough to make you tear up. That part is one of my husbands favorite since he has become a softie since we have had children. The way that this movie portrays how I would feel as a parent in a similar situation makes this a classic movie to me.

    1. I have to agree that "The Patriot" is a fantastic movie. It is the only war movie, that I can think of, that is rewatchable. It has the perfect balance between story and action. War movies are usually pretty good, but rarely would I want to watch it again and again. Historical movies, war movies, and period pieces usually drag on, but every seen of this movie is captivating.

  13. HELLO EVERYONE, are we really forgetting what the greatest movie of all time was???!!! "FOREST GUMP" That is the classic of all classics, one of the best directed movies of all time. Forest Gump captured all the elements of character, emotion, and the elements of life. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, a naive and slow-witted native of Alabama who witnesses, and in some cases influences, some of the defining events of the latter half of the 20th century. It shows all the elements of life including friendship, individuality, love, loss, and the process of aging. The relationship with Forest Gump and Lieutenant Dan was phenomenal, they were close friends, but the most intriguing this is they learned so much from each other. Along with Bubba, they had a heart felt relationship with one another through a time that made a great impact on their lives in the Vietnam War. This film won an abundance of awards and in my opinion was the greatest movie of all times!

    1. Forest Gump, of course! I still to this day have to watch it when it is on Television. My husband does not get it, but it is such an emotional, heart felt, funny, and sad movie. You are able to witness a man who was born into life with a few disabilities - leg problems and learning problems, but he in the end probably lived a more fulfilling life than anyone could ever ask for. I love how the movie takes you through each decade and just completely captivates you the whole time. Thanks for your post!

  14. It was really tough to pick a movie that I believe to be the best movie because I honesty like all kinds of movies. If I had to choose I believe that the best movie of all times has to be Brave Heart. This movie is great because it is based on a Scotsman who influenced fellow Scotsmen to fight for their freedom. The movie starts off slow building up tension and setting up the story. During this time the English claimed control over Scotland and the people were mistreated and murdered for almost any reason. William Wallace was only a boy when he witnesses many murders of Scotsmen, including his father, by the English. After his father’s death, he went to live with his uncle who educated him and taught him how to fight. As an adult he returned to his home town, he married and his wife was almost raped by noble English men, when she defended herself she was killed because “she attacked a noble English man”. In a moment of rage William Wallace attacked and killed all of the English guards who were involved in the murder of his wife, other Scotsmen joined him. From that moment there is a great deal of action because William Wallace inspired his people to fight for their freedom. Even though William Wallace was betrayed and killed at the end, his death inspired his people to keep fighting to gain their freedom from the English. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen not just because it has action and suspense but because it is based on an actual person and it is based on real events so you also get a taste of history.

  15. Okay, there is definitely a difference in opinion on what contitutes a great movie. I could not decide on what movie is the greatest, so I decided to look through my colection. I figured that I would most likely have whatever movie I felt was the greatest. However, when you own movies like "Hot Rod" and "Clifford" you start to think that maybe you don't have "great movie" taste. I decided that the movie I think is the greatest is the first one I can remember seeing. It will most likely never be seen on any "greatest movie list," but it is a great fim. Even though I own "Hook" I will always stop and watch it if it comes on tv. It has been one of my favorites since I was three. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg. The story is a continuation of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" where we find Peter(Robin Williams) as an adult with kids of his own. He is married to Windy's(Maggie Smith)granddaughter. Peter is workaholic lawyer with little time for his family. When Captain Hook(Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children, Peter must return to Neverland to rescue them. However, he does not remember his childhood or his true identity, thus cannot fly. He must remember who he is with the help of Tinker Bell(Julia Roberts) and the lost boys in order to retrieve his children. When at last he can fly again, he battles Hook for the last time, becoming his kids' hero. When they finally return home, Peter has become a better father. Although it was nominated for five Academy Awards (which I just discovered), I love it purely for its entertaining and nostalgic qualities.

    1. I have seen Hook and I must agree that it is a really good movie. It answers the question what ever happened to Peter Pan and to Wendy. This is a very entertaining movie it’s funny and also has action. I must admit I did not know it was nominated for Academy Awards but even if it wasn’t I would still recommend it.

    2. I think Hook is a great movie, and like Jcontreras said, it answers the question of what happened after Wendy left Neverland. It's now hard to see Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook after he was in the movie Meet the Fockers. Like the two of you, I too did not know it was nominated for five Academy Awards. This movie should be considered a classic even though many people have not seen it.

  16. There are so many wonderful films to choose. There are movies that make us think; two such movies are Schindler's List and The Color Purple. When one thinks about such films, one must acknowledge how racism and abuse has affected our world. Schindler's List showed the world that one person, Oskar Schindler, could truly make a difference in the midst of prejudice and hatred. Oskar risked his life many times over to save the lives of hundreds of Jewish people being persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime in Germany during World War II.
The Color Purple told the story of one woman’s, Celie; struggle to maintain her dignity and self-worth while enduring physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband. Despite the emotional and physical abuse, Celie never lost hope that she would be reunited with her children that had been taken from her when they were young children. Celie was able to find beauty in her world.
There are movies that make us laugh, but I think that movies can send a message that some may not listen too if it were not in a movie. Movies have the ability to get a conversation started, to make people think. How many people would be talking about the persecution and murder of Jewish people? How many people would gain knowledge of inner strength and dignity if they had not watched Celie in The Color Purple?

    1. I personally have never watched either of these movies but I agree with you in that movies send out messages. Whether it is intended or not, movies serve as a means to expose certain issue to the audience. Movies that have a deeper meaning then just entertaining such as these, can be greatly appreciated. A movie that comes to mind with this kind of meaning is The Green Mile. It also reflects the prejudices and discrimination against African Americans.

  17. The greatest movie of all time is “The Goonies”. This 1980’s cult classic blends comedy with the hero’s journey. As the band of youths fight to save the home they love and the only community they know, each discovers a little more about themselves and the others in the group. A movie that can turn a treasure hunt into a philanthropic mission of compassion for the greater good of the whole community is worthy of such a title of greatest movie of all time. Although the “Goonies” set out to find the treasure to save their home, the lesson the movie teaches to each viewer is that perseverance and hope can lead to new discoveries; however, the most important message is that true friendship and a sense of community is the most important thing a person can posses.

  18. For me, Passion of the Christ is the greatest movie of all time. The movie was not entertaining at all but it was deeply passionate. Although many people didn’t like the movie and criticized it, it really touched my heart. In my point of view Mel Gibson tried to do his best using the four New Testament Gospels of the Holy Bible as his source, as well as other historical writings, to represent the life of Jesus Christ and particularly the last hours in his life on earth. I liked very much the performance of Jim Caviazel in the role of Jesus Christ. He was very talented and clever in characterizing Christ. Maia Morgenstern did a fabulous job as well. Her portrayal of St. Mary was phenomenal and I was amazed by the connection that Mel Gibson created in the movie to portray the relationship between Christ and St. Mary. Although the bible didn’t tell us many details about the childhood daily life of Christ, Mel Gibson intelligently used the flashback technique to take us on a quick journey to explore a bit of the relationship the young Christ had with his mother. Although the movie was criticized as being an excessively violent movie, it really showed, from the Christian prospective, how much Christ truly suffered to save us from our sins. Regardless of the audience religion orientation, the movie did a great job of touching many viewers and one will definitely feel sorry for all what Christ had gone through. Of course, the background music and flashback helped not just in attracting the audience’s attention but rather their feelings as well. As a whole, the entire cast did incredible job throughout the movie. They were all in harmony, and each one of them accomplished his part successfully and brilliantly.

    1. This is a great choice for the best movie of all. It completely achieved its goal of engaging the viewers' emotions. The flashback technique was a very interesting and cleaver approach, and I didn't realize until now how much that added to the movie. I also thought the role of satan was taken very seriously, and was completely creative and unique. (I think it was a woman). Mel Gibson did a great job of portraying Jesus's relationships with the characters, especially his mother. The motherly perspective adds an entirely new dimension to the story, which was another thing that made Gibson's version a unique one.

  19. Like everyone else, I too had difficulty choosing a movie that could be considered the “greatest movie of all time,” but if I had to choose one I’d choose Gran Torino, starring Clint Eastwood. I personally think that almost every movie starring Clint Eastwood is a great movie, so based off of that this had to be my choice. I think this is such a good movie because it shows a once racist man realize that he was wrong and shouldn’t let a few bad apples ruin his opinion of the whole bunch. Clint Eastwood’s character, Walt Kowalski, is a grumpy old widow who doesn’t seem to have loved anyone but his wife and his prized Gran Torino. His prejudice arose from fighting in the Korean War, where like many other veterans, he began to hate the people that were killing his allies. One day he walks in on his young neighbor trying to steal his Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. Once the boy’s mother finds out about the shameful act he committed she makes him help out Walt with chores around his house; this is the start of the relationship. Eventually Walt begins to care for the young Hmong boy named Thao, even though he wouldn’t admit it out loud. Thao’s cousin, who is in a gang, begins to cause problems for Thao and his family; which eventually leads to Walt protecting them, further strengthening the bond between him and his neighbors. One night Thao’s sister Sue is attacked by her cousin and his gang; once Walt finds out about this he comes up with a plan for revenge. Walt goes to the gang members hideout unarmed in order to frame them for murder. In the end Walt is killed, the gang members are arrested, and Thao is shown how much Walt cared about he and his family, by the sacrifice he made and by Walt leaving his prized car to him. From this summary I hope you can see why this is the greatest movie of all time. At the beginning of this movie Walt was disgusted by his neighbors but by the end of it he sacrificed his life for them out of love. I’d also like to apologize for ruining the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

    1. I have not yet seen this film but it seems like it teaches a great life lesson. Often times. we see many young kids that are under-privileged become part of a gang or someone not seen as a good citizen in society. We know that most of these children who become delinquents often only need love and this is what Walt was able to provide for Thao. I believe it is safe to assume that Thao did not end up in the gang and that Walt's love and care grew on him and helped him become a better person. Now, maybe, Thao can learn to do that for some other child in need.

  20. In my personal opinion, the greatest movie of all time is Good Deeds. This recently released movie is amazing. The characters are fully engaged in what life is supposed to be as the idea society has created. Mr. Wesley Deeds, CEO of a successful and highly respected company that was originally established by his father. As successful as he was and his life working out perfectly as planned, he was an unhappy man. He was tired of being held responsible for taking care of his brother whom was an irresponsible and selfish individual, and pleasing his mother and her unrealistic expectations. He was engaged to a beautiful and successful woman, Natalie whom he had everything with. As a hard working individual, he holds strong work ethics. He extremely cared about his father's company and the employees and would often work late hours. While working late on night, he met night shift janitor, Lindsey. Lindsey was a single-mother who was struggling make ends meet and lost everything including her home. After meeting her and getting to her and her daughter, he realized that life is too short to be unhappy. He soon called off the engagement, informed everyone including his mother and brother that he was going to take a brake from the chaos, and decided to take a vacation. He invited Lindsey and her daughter to join him; she denied at first but then decided to join him. The movie allows the viewers realize that happiness is not all that society makes it be; it comes within oneself, and the people we chose to bee around and have in our lives.

  21. I can't remember the movies that made me go, "That's the greatest movie of all time!!", but when I think of a great movies, Cinderella Man comes to mind. I really enjoyed that movie. It had a lot of action as well as drama. It was moving and heart-warming. It had me talking to the screen during the boxing matches. The movie takes place, I believe, in the 50's. It's about a husband trying to provide for his family through hard times. He used to be a famous boxer who lost everything due to the economy. With each fight, he gets closer to providing a better life for his family. It's a really good movie.

  22. There are so many movies out there, that it is a tough decision to choose the "greatest" movie of all time. But, if I had to choose one, I would choose the movie "Taken". If you have not seen it, "Taken", is about a young girl who lives with her mother. Her mom gives her permission to go to Europe but since she is underage and is going out of the country, she also has to ask her Dad for permission to get his signature. Well, when she arrives to Paris, she, and her friend, get kidnapped and both are sold into prostitution. The girls father, being a former C.I.A agent, hears the whole kidnapping happen while on the phone with her and records everything. This dad actually talks to the kidnapper and tells him that he will find him, and kill him. He then travels to Paris in search for his daughter. This movie is about a fathers determination to find his daughter. It is the greatest movie of all time because he flies all the way to Paris from America in search for his daughter whom he loves. He is very determined and uses his skills that he acquired while being a C.I.A agent to find her. He goes through so much stuff getting more and more clues, and eventually finds his daughter and her friend (but there is a twist, not to give away the ending). But, the moral of the story is that a father’s (or any parents) love is so strong that they will do whatever it takes to keep their children safe and if something were to happen to them, whoever did it, will be found. Nothing can stop a parents love, especially the one a father has for his daughter.

  23. A lot of the movies already listed are seriously great! And for me it was hard to chose, but I finally decided on Gnomeo and Juliet. I decided on this movie for a number of reasons. I have an 8 year-old nephew and a 2 year-old niece, and we watch a lot of movies together, but this is the one we all love. I enjoyed this movie so much because I was able to sit down with my nephew and explain to him the original story of Romeo and Juliet. I know he is only eight, but he is going to encounter this story later in school and he is very smart, he loves to read and is always interested in learning. I also love animated love stories. I have seen Gnomeo and Juliet at least 15 times. Not that I am a big fan of William Shakespeare, but I think it is awesome the way his work was taken and able to be told in a way that children can understand. This movie is not just for children, but it is also for adults. I remember being forced to read Romeo and Juliet, which I hated, and still till this day I remember the book so well. Watching this movie I was able to take what I had read and learned and compare the two. I would watch Gnomeo and Juliet any day over reading Romeo and Juliet.

  24. One of the best movies I have watched would have to be Man of Fire. The storyline begins with a sense of fear among wealthier citizens in Mexico after kidnappings begin to occur with more frequency. As a result of the abductions, parents began to hire bodyguards for their children. Then John Creasy (Denzel Washington), an ex-CIA operative/assassin comes into the story. He is hired by Samuel Ramos, an industrialist, and his wife Lisa to look after their daughter Pita. At first, Creasy hardly tolerates the child and her questions about him and his life. Then slowly after some time, he opens up to her. After Pita is kidnapped he is then determined to find her and her kidnappers. The reason this movie is one of my favorites is because it is action filled. Also, I personally like Denzel Washington’s work in the film as he makes his character feel authentic. Also, it made me feel anxious and intrigued to know what would happen next.

  25. Although there are a great number of films that deserve the title "Greatest Movie of all Time," the one film that I feel deserves that accolade the most is To Kill a Mockingbird. Many people view this movie once after reading the novel in middle or high school, and give little thought to ever viewing it again. However, if one watches it every few years, they will find that they take away a different message every single time. As a child, Scout’s eagerness to solve the mystery of Boo Radley is often the main focus. As a teenager, the issues of racism begin to make themselves relevant. Depending on one’s background, they may find themselves paying attention to Mayella Ewell’s situation with her father. As one grows into a parent, they may find themselves identifying with Atticus Finch’s predicament.
The film covers many topics that everyone faces at one time in their lives. Growing up, obviously, but also gender and class differences. The courage to do what is right over what is generally accepted by society is also a large theme in the movie. Although the book does a superb job of addressing all these issues, the movie stands on its own as a cinematic masterpiece because it was able to seamlessly address these issues as well. While the two complement one another, Gregory Peck’s performance as Atticus Finch is one that every individual needs to see in their lifetime. He perfectly portrays a single father struggling to do what he feels is right while his children often take the blame for his choices.

  26. Labeled as "Entertaining and Inspiring" by People magazine, Erin Brockovich is the greatest movie of all time.
Julia Roberts captivates the audience with her witty charm and stunning good looks. Based on a true story, Julia Roberts plays the role of Erin Brockovich. The beginning of the movie presents the hardships that Erin Brockovich endured. Erin Brockovich is a single mother of 3 children. Due to the loss of her job, she struggles to pay utility bills and put food on the table in her modest home. She demonstrates her superior parenting skills by shielding her children with love and laughter. Many heart strings are pulled as viewers witness her enduring hardship and love for her children. Using her witting charm, a characteristic that works well for her, she convinces an attorney to give her a job. Before long, she uncovers a epic scandal that cooperate giant PG&E try to cover up and finds herself involved in one of the biggest lawsuits ever. Her people skills, hard work, and dedication help with the success of the lawsuit, which brings justice to many deserving families. The entire move captivates its audience by the heart warming story and inspires us all to stand up for what is right.

  27. In order to determine the best movie of all time, I must define what I mean by "best." Therefore, according to my definition of "best" as being "that which engaged my emotions, was visually and audibly entertaining, unique, contained believable characters and left me satisfied at the end," my idea of the best movie of all time is The Lion King. The "Circle of Life" scene in the beginning of the movie is filled with color, variation and action, which, combined with the song itself, makes for a highly inspiring effect. The beginning seems to introduce the movie in a way that gives its viewers confidence and excitement about what will unfold as it progresses. The movie also uses the visual effect of unity on several occasions to create the excitement of a musical, such as in the bow of the different animals to the king and his successor at the beginning and end, and the march during Scar's song. The scene in which Scar sings "Be Prepared," mimics the militant power that infamous dictators such as Adolf Hitler had, which offers a political lens through which to view the story. In addition to the entertainment of these action-packed scenes, the jungle images throughout the movie and the colorful bug-eating scenes with Timon and Pumba are all visually interesting, make the movie unique among other Disney productions, and keep viewers unable to guess what will happen next. The characters are also reflected immaculately through the voices of the actors behind them, and are complimented by their appearance. The characterization is precise enough to disguise the fact that some of the voices are those of recognizable famous actors. Lastly, this movie, after taking me through a journey that included harmony within the jungle, followed by harmless fun, tragic loss, confusion and loneliness, friendship and survival, love, revenge and courage, brought my emotions full-circle and back to the sense of peace characterized by the song "Circle of Life." The song is so fitting, not only because it offers an ecological viewpoint through which to watch the movie, but it also reflects the pattern of emotions represented by its sequence of events. Rarely do movies leave me feeling ready to move on with my life immediately afterwards, but this one did that for me because it satisfied my curiosity by showing that the events that make a movie interesting and worth watching are events that occur through the various seasons of life, and are going to be repeated. Therefore fighting off villains is not something that is done once and for all, and neither is experiencing loss or facing a challenge. Therefore, because the ending was such an imitation of the beginning, I was able to walk away from this movie and understand that the events that took place were merely a small sample of life itself, and that such events will continue to occur. Viewing life itself with the “circle of life” philosophy presented in this movie makes going through difficult or unpredictable times much more bearable, and a valuable life lesson or enlightenment, I believe, is a trademark of a great movie.
